The Yellow Jambhala is the Buddhist Kubera i.e. God of Wealth. As Yellow Jambhala he is seated on a lion in Savyalalitasana with right leg dangling. In Buddhism he became a lokal guardian of the quarter. He is shown as pot-bellied and wears rich ornaments. He carries Jambhara (lemon) in his right hand, while in his left hand he holds a mongoose (nakula) vomitting jewels.
Jambhala´s abode is said to be Alaka in the Himalayas, enriched with wealth and abundance. He is surrounded with yaksha generals. In Durgatiparisodhana Tantra, it is stated, Kubera the great king of Yakshas, bowed before the Lord Shakyamuni Buddha and said: O Lord, I together with eighty eight great war generals of Yakshas, will persevere in removing every fear of that great being who holds this tantra. I will give wealth and grain in abundance. I will protect his country and provinces, his people, servants, relatives, friend, sons, daughters, wive and the rest. I will take care of his oxen, cows, asses, camels, sheep, elephants, goats and the rest.

Kubera is thus especially invoked for generating wealth and prosperity. There are many legends relating to his role as guardian of all the treasures of earth and the treassures belonging to the people. Kubera is worshipped both by the Hindus and Buddhist alike.

Jambhala is one of the Dharmapala or Dikpala which are the guardians of the directions corners: Dhritarastra - Indra (Tib. Yul Khorsung) is the king of gods, presides over the east; Virudhaka over the south; Virupaksa over the west and Kubera-Vaisravana the god of wealth, presides over the north.
