Kubera (Tib. Nam Those) is one of the 8 Dharmapalas and 4 Digpalas. Kubera is the protecor of wealth and of the North. He holds a banner of victory in his right hand and carries a mongoose which vomits a wish fulfilling gem. Kubera´s abode is said to be Alaka in the Himalayas, enriched with wealth and abundance. He is always surrounded with yaksha generals and Kinnars. He may have sometimes a third eye.

In Durgatiparisodhana Tantra, it is stated that Kubera the great king of Yakshas, bowed before the Lord Shakyamuni Buddha and said:

O Lord, I together with eighty eight great war generals of Yakshas, will keep on removing every fear of that great being who holds this tantra. I will give wealth and grain in abundance. I will protect his country and provinces, his people, servants, relatives, friend, sons, daughters, wive and the rest. I will take care of his oxen, cows, asses, camels, sheep, elephants, goats and the rest.

He is thus especially invoked for generating wealth and prosperity. There are many legends relating to his role as a guardian of all the treasures of earth and the treassures belonging to the people.

Kubera is worshipped both by the Hindus and Buddhists.
