Details

Original Tibetan Buddha figure Yamantaka - Vajrabhairava with his wife Vajravetali on Yama from Nepal.

Made in cast bronze, then fire gilded and painted. The statue has an opening at the back to fill the statue.

Yamantaka, is an angry god of the highest yoga tantra caste with buffalo head (Tib. Yi-Dam) and protector of Vajrayana Buddhism. In the Gelug tradition, he is next to Chakrasamvara and Guhyasamaja the three main deities. The Great Teacher Tsongkhapa (1357 - 1419) declared Yamantaka the patron saint of the Gelug tradition. In the Shakya tradition, he is revered as one of the Dharmapalas and protector of the teachings. The Kagyu tradition sees in him the angry aspect of Manjushri. According to legend, he defeated Yama the god of death represented as a bull and is therefore considered a conqueror of death. He wins over evil, disease and death. In Tibet, he is considered a protective deity against evil forces.
His mantra is "Om Yamantaka Hum Phat".
